- “Youth can make India ‘Sone Kee Chidiyaa’ once again being on right path”: Gen. Singh
Recipient of Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) & Yudh Seva Medal (YSM; Cabinet Minister General (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh visited Lovely Professional University today. Inaugurating the Master Lecture Series for students, Minister Singh invoked LPU students during ‘Seminar on Role of Youth in Nation Development’ to bring a remarkable change in the society to take India to greater heights. Minister interacted with students and discussed various roles youth ought to play for the propagation and development of the country. From an Army officer to being a politician-Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region, the former army chief guided students to contribute in developing the country. MLA Phagwara constituency Mr Som Parkash, former MLA Batala Mr Jagdish Sahni, Chairman of Lovely Group Mr Ramesh Mittal, Vice Chairman Mr Naresh Mittal, and Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal were other dignitaries present on the occasion.
Sharing his military experiences with students, Gen. Singh told students: “Army operations are always successful as there is unity of purpose in a particular manner. There are no language, religion, caste and creed constraints. So is in your university, and I invoke you all to rise and shine by forgetting all differences. Your energy will lead you to those heights for which no one else can even dream about. You are the people to decide the future of the country.” Gen. Singh also appreciated the functioning and facilities being provided to the students at the university. He even said that had he been young, we would have certainly joined LPU as its student.
Talking about roles to be performed by the youth, Gen Singh made it clear that these can be any of the fields-be it cleanliness, law & order, literacy mission, or useful schemes of the government. Also guiding the faculty Mr Singh said: “We elders have to inculcate a great feeling of getting together among students to bring a massive change. We have a large percentage of youth in the country, and we should give our learning to the youth for action. We are to be there to assist and guide youth to be on the right path.”
LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal welcomed the cabinet minister along with other LPU dignitaries and also led him to campus visit. Mr Mittal said: “We are extremely happy to receive the highly crowned commander Gen VK Singh to our campus who cancelled his USA trip only to meet LPU youth.” Taking the examples of great Indians and international figures who reached to glorious heights in their youth, Mr Mittal also invoked students to be innovative in their deeds. He emphasized that youth is the most powerful engine in national development. Mr Mittal asked government to be liberal in education policy and to accord support for research works.”
During interactive session students asked about prospects of youth on being an MP/MLA; which positive thing in politics can inspire youth to join it in spite of considered as a dirty game; shift to be made in reservation from being caste based to economic conditions based; reliable weapons with the army; surfing animosity with neighbour countries and more. Minister Singh made positive answers in a key line-“When we all get together, things can be altogether changed.”
Illustrative, General Singh’s grandfather fought in the WWI and his father was a Colonel in the Indian Army making him the third generation carrying the tradition forward in the Indian Army. General Singh is known for his distinguished service as the 24th Chief of Army Staff of Indian Army. He is also the 33rd International Fellow and the first Indian Armed Forces officer to be inducted into the United States Army War College International Fellows Hall of Fame. He graduated from the Defence Services Staff College as a Honours graduate of the United States Army Infantry School & topped the Rangers Course at Fort Benning.
