- Balvir Kaur and Satish Kumar are declared the best woman and man athletes
The curtain fell on the 7th Annual Sports Meet of Lovely Professional University by declaring Balvir Kaur (4 Gold Medals) and Satish Kumar (3 Gold Medals) as the best woman and man athletes of the University. After tough competitions among participating athletes from different departments of the university, School of Physical Education won 22 Gold Medals; Electronics & Computer Engineering three; Mechanical Engineering and Distance Education 2 each. Under the clear-cut diversity shining at the sports arena by athletes from all the Indian States and 30 other countries, 11 new records were made in different events. The cauldron, which was lit on the inaugural day, was finally put out with a promise to meet again next year. Fireworks also exploded next to the sports stadium during the grand closing ceremony held with cultural activities and artistic performances, including body-building demonstration.
Congratulating all the participants for the successful outcome of hard-fought competitions, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal inspired all for illustrious future efforts in sports. Mr Mittal said: “Such competitions are not only about medals but also for representing the best for respective departments. In fact, these are about sportsmanship, fair play, friendship and team spirit.”
Getting equal chances with regular students, LPU Distance Education students displayed the best athletic skills and won overall 2nd Runners up trophy of the Sports Meet. Jasdeep Singh from Taran Taran secured 1st positions in Long Jump of 6.06 metres and 400 m race bringing forth new meet records in both the events. Sandeep Singh from Rayya secured 3rd position in 400 m race, Kirandeep Singh secured 3rd position in 5000 m race; and, Pardeep Kaur from Kot Ise Khan secured 3rd position in Hammer Throw event.
Results: For 100 Mtr run Vittanala Pavan Kumar with 11.70 sec, Fredrick Junior Daniel with 11.94 sec and Chanderdeep with 12.27 sec remained 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Men category. Sarvjit Kaur with 14.24 sec, Kasak Chaudhary with 15.66 sec and Priyanka Kumari with 16.11 sec got 1st, 2nd and 3rd position.
For Hammer Throw Men Gurpal Singh with 20.36 Mtrs; Tajinder Singh with 19.55 Mtrs; and, Jyoti Kumar with 18.06 Mtrs declared first, second and third respectively. For women, Clodiya K. John declared 1st with 18.95 Mtrs; Gurinderjit Kaur 2nd with 17.80 Mtrs; and, Pardeep Kaur 3rd with 17.19 Mtrs.
For 5000 Mtr Race for Men Jagdeep Kumar took 18.09 Min to be on 1st position; Bharat Verma with 19.44 Min second; and, Kirandeep with 21.28 Min remained 3rd. For women, Kusum Maikhuri took 22.59 min first; Pooja 25.17 Min for being second; and, Jyoti took 32.03 Min for 3rd position.
For High Jump Men Satish remained first with jump of 1.70 Mtr; Sarvesh Shekhar 2nd with 1.62 Mtr; and, Deepanshu Deep third with 1.53 Mtr. For women, Minna Rajan with 1.18 Mtr, Gursharnpal with 1.16 Mtr, and Babita Nagarkoti with 1.14 Mtr got 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
For 200 Mtr race K Charan Teja took 24.80 Secs, Mohammad Umar Khan 24.89 Sec, and Dhruba Jyoti Roy 25.44 Secs to be declared 1st, 2nd & 3rd in men category. For women, Km Sarvjit Kaur took 29.34 Sec, Pooja 32.40 Sec, and Kasak Chaudhary 33.35 Secs for first three positions respectively.
In Javelin Throw (Women) Paramjit Kaur with 18.70 Mtr throw; Renu Munda with 18.05 Mtr; and, Tanishka Bist with 16.75 Mt remained first, second & third. For Men, Akash Soman with throw of 44.75 Mtrs, Abhishek with 42.50 Mtrs and Chanderdeep with 40.50 Mtrs remained 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.
For 4x400 Mtr relay race (Men), two groups of athletes from School of Physical Education with 3.51 Min & 4.04 Min declared first & third; whereas, athletes from School of Mechanical Engineering got 2nd position with 3.54 Minutes. In women category all the first three positions are got by athlete groups of School of Physical Education.
For 4x100 Mtr relay race (Women), two groups of athletes from School of Physical Education with 59.18 Secs and 1:06 Min declared first & second; whereas, athletes from School of Computer Applications with 1:11 minutes got third position. In men category, two groups of athletes from School of Physical Education with 47:94 Secs and 48:11 Secs declared first & second; whereas, athletes of Distance Education stood 3rd with 50.15 secs.
