One of India's top Stand-up Comedian ‘Sorabh Pant’ enthralled LPU Students

Thousands of Lovely Professional University students went for an enthralling treat, today, when one of India's top stand-up comedians, ‘Sorabh Pant’ made students laugh their lungs out at densely packed Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium. The writer–cum-comedian, Sorabh Pant made jokes about relationships, travel, communities, politicians and situations. The large crowd of students had its fill of laughter as he took contemporary issues, scenes & situations, even currency ban, and made LPU students live in a healthy comic environment of about two-hours at a stretch. His naughty banter, wit, teasing, mockery, joking, chitchat was applauded by all.

Sorabh Pant is one of India's successful comedians and has done 250+ shows in many top cities across India & the world. He has been rated amongst India's top six stand-up comedians, and renowned bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan has dubbed him as "the funniest guy on stage". 

Addressing students, Pant shared: “I am very happy to be in the humour industry. It is really contradictory that being funny is serious business. We all stand-up comedians tickle audience through our presence of mind. I am a home-grown comedian and carry the Indian sensibility in my acts. As everyone loves a good laugh, we stand-up comedians are presently the new star performers. Persons like me are pulling crowds away from multiplexes to spaces dedicated for stand-up shows. In fact, comedy has ushered as a great art form.”

Illustrative, Pant started off as a writer for TV and slowly became one of India’s great comedians. 'Pant on Fire' is Pant's first comedy which was staged in India, Dhaka, Dubai, and also hit the shores of North America. ‘Traveling Pants' is his second comedy that takes on cultures and people in India and around the world. He has founded one of India's busiest comedy company 'The East India Comedy' (EIC) which has done record shows across the country and the globe. Pant has also released his novel 'Under Delhi'.

Lovely Professional University organized its annual two-day event ‘Explorica’ to guide school students about right career path after 10+2. The event saw massive participation of 30000+ students from 300 schools and 100 + Principals, where young students showcased their talent on a larger platform. More than 100 informative stalls were put up by LPU students and faculty members. This year, a new dimension was added to the event in the form of School Principals’ Summit on the topic ‘Emotional Intelligence, Value meaning and Relevance in Education’ to forward leadership skills. LPU also showcased university projects to guide school-students that after their schools, life in university is all about creating new projects and following their passion.

Visiting students discovered, learnt and participated actively in competitive, non- competitive events including Gyan Manthan, Academic Exposition, School Students’ Projects, Literary, Fine & Performing Arts competitions. Students also enjoyed the international cultural diversity at simultaneously going on international fest ‘One World’ of the university. Competitive events’ winners also got cash prizes in lacs of Rupees.

Participating Principals S J S Hundal (Mayor World School), Ms Anila Nayyar (Aurobindo School Baddi, Himachal Pradesh), Mr Maninder ( DPS Chandigarh) unanimously hinted: “ The event was very motivational where not only students but we also learnt much about leadership and social skills in getting along well with others.” School-students’ projects like “Hydraulic City, Pollution Free City, Potato Gun, Bio-Diesel Plant, Burglar Alarm, Tree-Shifter Hydraulic Machine, Multiple Chulah, LoC Laser Beam Security Device’ and many other were applauding.

LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal informed: “Realizing our social responsibility to renew India's potential for intellectual leadership and national progress, LPU has initiated ‘Explorica’ to nurture young minds right from their school days. This program is sure to broaden the vision of school students. This is in accordance to our policy to rejuvenate education at all levels by starting with schools, which will ultimately enlighten the society.”

Under Academic Exposition, LPU students and teachers guided about different study-programs in details to school students for their career ahead. LPU department of Business inspired visitors about entrepreneurship; department of Agriculture exhibited soil-less production, vertical farming, the best tomato produce through infra red and blue light usage, hydrophonic agriculture and more; department of Fashion taught them about latest fashion trends and modeling; from Journalism and Film Production departments students learnt how to be reporters, content writers, anchors and more; the Robotics & Intelligent Computers Systems society showcased their achievements in the fields of automotives and solar energy usage. Similarly, other departments revealed the best in them through various exhibitions and expositions made by them.

Her Excellency Dr (Mrs) Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of the Republic of Mauritius, chaired two-phased 7th Convocation of Lovely Professional University (LPU) today. She honoured PhDs and toppers of various LPU academic programs and delivered Convocation Address. During this ceremony, 15000+ distance education students, who passed their June 2016 examinations, also received post-graduate, graduate degrees and diplomas. LPU Convocation also turned out to be momentous for Mauritius and India when the Chief Guest, President of the Republic of Mauritius, Her Excellency Dr (Mrs) Ameenah Gurib-Fakim was conferred upon honorary Doctor of Letters  (Honoris Causa) degree of the University.  Dr (Mrs) Ameenah was conferred honorary doctorate for her ardent working towards advancement of science, technology and in recognition of her services for the society. On this occasion, Lovely Group Chairman Mr Ramesh Mittal, Vice Chairman Mr Naresh Mittal, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal, Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ramesh Kanwar and Director General Er H R Singla shared the main dais. 

Before making Convocation address, HE Mauritian President Dr (Mrs) Ameenah expressed her condolences and sympathies to the family members of the persons died in recent train accident in India. Admitting to be an ardent fan of energy providing Punjabi culture, HE Dr (Mrs) Ameenah began convocation address with “Sat Sri Akal” and “Mainu Punjab ‘ch aa ke bahut khushi mehsoos ho rahi hai.” She said: “Punjab is the melting pot of incredible India and is undoubtedly a land of lions, where bravery and courage rule the hearts of men and women alike. Moreover, the economic opportunities in Punjab are endless.” Advising students, she said: “Bring difference in the world through education received at LPU. As a scientist, I am enthused by LPU’s emphasis on invention, creativity and development. LPU is a citadel of learning and has all ingredients of an excellent university. Carry on this legacy of excellence which has been forwarded to you here. Knowledge can only be effective if it is applied and leads to innovation and development. Go on to deliver excellence in every field of your life. Make your parents, Punjab and Motherland proud of you.”

Illustrative, world renowned biodiversity scientist, Her Excellency is the first ever woman to hold the title of the President of Mauritius. Mentioning India as the land of her forefathers, she shared that India and Mauritius has so many things in common be it traditions, values or culture. She also shared: “India will continue to play a key role in the global economy and as an economic powerhouse in the South Asian region.” She also wanted a kind of education in India and Mauritius under which young and ignited minds of both the countries should not leave for other countries.

Prior to this, welcoming the high-profiled chief-guest HE Dr Ameenah at densely packed Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium, LPU Chancellor shared with all how Mauritius with not much land and natural resources has risen as one of the richest countries in the African Continent, through able guidance of leaders like HE Dr (Mrs) Ameenah. Addressing students, Mr Mittal shared: “Today, Mauritius has become a center of textiles, tourism and advanced technology. Students should learn strong determination, sincerity, and hard-work from Mauritian stories of regular successes. Believe me - no dream is big enough. Just like the people of Mauritius and Her Excellency Dr Ameenah, dream big and strive to achieve the impossible.”

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu interacted with LPU Students

On the inaugural day of three-day ‘Young Vertos Business Summit 2016’ organized at Lovely Professional University, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu interacted with LPU students.  Addressing students on the topic “We in the Development of India”, through video conference, Mr Minister emphasized upon the importance of fast changing world and particularly India. He said: “All should keep pace with the changes and developments. Each and every one of us should do well in our respective domains. Instead of forwarding ideas to others one should stick to his or her own work with perfection. India needs great doers rather than mere advisers”.

President of Mauritius will be the Chief Guest at 7th Convocation of LPU

Seventh Convocation of Lovely Professional University is scheduled for Monday, 21st November 2016 at 10 am. Her Excellency President of the Republic of Mauritius Dr. (Mrs.) Ameenah Gurib Fakim will be the Chief Guest at the Convocation. President Dr Gurib-Fakim will honour PhDs, gold medalists and toppers of various LPU academic programs and deliver the Convocation Address. Degrees and diplomas will also be awarded to 13,000 Distance Education students for the class of 2016 (June Examination).

Architectural conference ‘NICHE-2016’ witnessed 31 Global Giants at LPU to make World Smartly Habitable

The second edition of international architectural conference NICHE-IPM (Neo- International Conference of Habitable Environments & International Professionals Meet) 2016 was concluded today at Lovely Professional University (LPU) on promising notes. 31 eminent speakers from across the world including USA, Australia, Italy, Slovenia pondered massively to churn out befitting solutions for smart living world across. LPU School of Architecture & Design had organized this three day conference in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA)- Chandigarh Punjab Chapter- a part of national body of architects in the country. The conference dealt with all aspects of architecture, planning and design in relation to the principal aim of the conference ‘smart existence for one and all in this world’. LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal congratulated all for successful outcome of the international conference. 

The event, indeed, attracted wide range of cross disciplinary professionals dealing with built environment. National and international professionals, academicians, developers, contractors, builders, environmentalists, architects, students and policy makers from all related fields marked their remarkable presence at the conference. LPU students, reputed contractors and artisans also showcased their works and products. On the conclusive days, speaking on the smart city concept- “The Flourishing Smart City: Sustainability for All”, Prof Dr Arlene Plevin (Bremerton, USA) shared five principles for sustainability. These principles are- respecting life and natural resources; living within limits; valuing the local: respect for neighbourhood; accounting for full costs; and, sharing power. Prof Mateja Geder from Slovenia talked about behavior change towards smart sustainable participatory live-able cities. Former Additional Commissioner (Planning), DDA Delhi, Mr Vinod Sakle described about smart Master Plan for Delhi-2021; whereas, Ar Tara Sharma Singla explored possibilities of regeneration in the beautiful city of India ‘Chandigarh’.

Similarly, Director at Sthapati Associates (Lucknow & Delhi) Ar Harsh Varshneya wanted architectural fraternity to observe culture, climate and context, which all three have common binding with nature. Prof Dr Ashok from the School of Planning & Architecture New Delhi explained that benefits from smart cities are-Improved efficiency; Reduced pollutant emissions; and, above all, Economic growth. Prof. Mukul Kulkarni of Priyadarshini Institute of Architecture and Design Studies, Nagpur, discussed ‘New Office Cultures’ to think differently and create purpose free common thinking with priority to processes. Ar Sanjay Goel and Ar Richa Malik talked about innovations in smart cities and intelligent building facades.

One of the participating students, Sai Manoj Kumar who is pursuing B Arch III year at LPU coming far away from Vijayawada (AP) said: “We are fortunate to be part of this international conference which has indeed provided us massive exposure. We get more of the practical learning at LPU instead of mere bookish knowledge. Recently, we have won coveted Overall Runners up Trophy at Zonal NASA competitions held in New Delhi, where more than 75 colleges of architecture had participated. Our winning is only due to such exposures which we keep on getting at LPU.”

LPU organized Leadership Development Program

Since inaugurated by AICTE Chairman Prof Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe, Human Resource Development Center (HRDC) at Lovely Professional University has organized many workshops, research endeavours and training programs through eminent resource persons for LPU faculty and staff members. Recently, a management development program on the topic ‘Emotional Intelligence for Leaders’ was organized, where renowned mentor, author and motivational speaker Mr Vivek Atray, ex-IAS, mentored heads of various departments of LPU.  Executive Director of Vibrant Advisory Services Ms Preeti Parashar also conducted this program. More than 100 LPU leaders participated in the day long program for an experiential learning of key leadership skills. 

Taking the example of former Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mr Atray asked all participants to be better communicator along with being firm and decisive in their actions. According to the participants, the prominent understanding they made included seeing the bigger picture; ability to handle stress in a better way; peacemaking conduct; improved consideration of colleagues; balanced leadership skills; and, the magic of cheerfulness. The program was conducted with a judicious blend of practical scenarios, experiential activities, case studies and film analysis. The participants expressed their views enthusiastically on current leadership issues affecting India at the international scenario.

LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal informed: “Aiming to revive the glory of the ancient Indian education system, we have specially devised HRDC to train faculty and staff members as per their domains. Getting well versed with world class skills and abilities, they will further prepare LPU students to succeed in a highly competitive professional environment. At LPU, we care for young aspiring minds so that they become architects of the future society. We feel satisfied when we provide ace professionals to India and the world.”

Prior to this program, LPU faculty members have already been trained on ‘High Impact Teaching Skills’ by training consultant from Dale Carnegie Training India, headquartered in New York, USA. LPU and National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) Chandigarh collaborate for providing state of the art training. Various eminent resource persons from  University of Iowa (USA); Illinois Wesleyan University (USA); Lake head University, Canada; Energyzt (USA), IIT Roorkee;  Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh; IIFT Delhi; and, many more have also mentored faculty members. 

Maldivian Defence Minister visited LPU


  • Occasion was a seminar on ‘Capacity Building & Youth Empowerment’ for LPU students


His Excellency, Minister of Defence and National Security (Government of Maldives) Adam Shareef Umar visited Lovely Professional University today. Occasion was Maldivian Minister’s dialogues of utmost importance to LPU students on the topic ‘Capacity Building & Youth Empowerment’, which is of great interest to both India and Maldives. His interaction with LPU students proved gratifying when HE personally recognized potentiality of LPU in capacity building for engaging youth. He was accompanied by his wife Ms Zeenaz Adnan and Principle Director of Department of International Defence Cooperation and Policy (Maldives) Colonel Abdul Matheen Ahmed. Lovely Group Vice-Chairman Mr Naresh Mittal welcomed the high profiled guests from Maldives.

One of the top Maldivian politicians, Mr Adam Shareef is also ‘Special Envoy’ of the President of the Maldives. Graduating from the University of East Anglia (UK), with an MA in Education, he has also served as Minister of State for Education after starting his career as a primary teacher more than 30 years back.  Being basically a teacher, he completely understands what are the existing needs & aspirations of students and what are expectations from them in present scenario. Now, coming closer LPU and Maldives will work together on various capacity building projects for engaging maximum of youth on positive notes in both the countries.

Referring LPU as one of the best universities in the world with bountiful resources, Mr Minister said to students: “Be better & responsible persons; help & educate your colleagues & class-fellows too; and help in creating society a better existence globe over.” Lamenting the materialistic pursuits in the 21st century, he guided students to avoid unhealthy exercises and unexpected behavior. He also expected students not to be merely money focused and economics oriented. Informing about great bondage between India and Maldives, he said: “Both the countries have a long history of esteemed and strong bonding between people and people. There exists common culture, special loving feelings without any of the conflicts, and indeed great relationship between the two. We in Maldives always believe that India is ever-ready to help us in any of the crises.” He also shared that many of his staff members are also getting special training at LPU.

LPU Executive Deans Dr Lovi Raj Gupta & Dr Sanjay Modi apprised HE Adam Shareef about different endeavours being taken by LPU towards capacity building and youth empowerment. Associate Director of International Affairs at LPU Mr Aman Mittal also shared the main dais.   One of the Maldivian students Ismail, who is pursuing B Sc Biotechnology at LPU said: “We are greatly inspired to see great leaders of our country amid us to inspire and guide the entire young generation. We are fortunate to be at LPU which always provides us bigger platforms to co-exist in an individual and special way to be a better part of global society.”

His Excellency Ambassador of Togo country Mr Alexandre Kanyi Galley Logosu Teko inaugurated one of the largest architectural conferences in India ‘NICHE-IPM 2016 at Lovely Professional University. Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) Chandigarh Chapter and LPU collaborated to organize the conference to carry forward the themes of smart living under urban planning & infrastructure, design innovations and sustainable built environments. Inaugural key-note address of the conference was made by renowned landscape architect of Australia, Mr Matthew Taylor, amid other stalwart speakers & architects from USA, Europe, across India and would be architects from LPU School of Architecture & Design. 

On this occasion, HE Ambassador Teko, President Institute of Town Planners India Dr DS Meshram, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal, Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal, NICHE-IPM 2016 conference convener Atul Singla, patron Surinder Bahga and chair Sanjay Goel released a souvenir also. Declaring the conference open, HE Ambassador congratulated all the organizers and participants for great endeavours undertaken to contemplate and discuss the critical issues related to the needs and challenges of urbanization. He shared: “With the prime focus to improve quality of life for present and better tomorrow, a movement towards better living and better environments has indeed been initiated through this massive conference.” 

While addressing the vast gathering of architects, urban planners and designers; Associate of Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, Ar Matthew Taylor said: “We must create innovative and culturally expressive environments in our architectural designs and planning. We all are one planners and own designs together; in fact, we have responsibilities towards our designs. So, our approach should integrate architecture, landscape and ecology in a sustainable environment. We ought to facilitate community in harmony with nature.” Sharing more he admitted: “We in the West have lost concept of nature; however, re-contact with nature is very important as it is always engaging with the senses.” Making presentation of 170 pictures from urban world, history, monuments, islands, timber structures and many more, Mr Taylor elaborated his ideas.

Similarly, one of the oldest architects in India Ar S.D Sharma also forwarded great thoughts about planning and designing for the benefit of modern architect fraternity. Mr Sharma is the founder and senior architect partner, who has been associated with ‘Chandigarh Project’ since the inception of the city in 1952. He has worked with world famous Architect Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanerette, both of whom were the architects of the beautiful city ‘Chandigarh project”. 

Bollywood Actors Rannvijay & Tanvi selected Semi-finalists for Mr & Miss India 2017 at LPU

Audition for selection of semi-finalists for ‘Mr & Miss India 2017' were held today at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium of Lovely Professional University. The event was judged by renowned Bollywood & Pollywood actors and popular TV show stars- Rannvijay Singh & Tanvi Nagi.  More than 50 students participated to display the best of talent on the ramp for selection. Supported by LPU students’ organization ‘Wings of Hope’, the successful participants in the grand finale will be able to win prizes worth Rs 11 lac. In addition, consolation prizes will be for everyone and assurance is also there for working in TV serials. Mr Sharad Chaudhary, the Director of Dreamz Production House, also coordinated for the judgment process. LPU students of Journalism & Film Production got important tips for production, acting and presentation from the visiting celebrities.
Winner of the first season of MTV Roadies (2003), Rannvijay Singh (a VJ on MTV India) and Tanvi Nagi are Indian actors, who act in Bollywood, Punjabi Films, video songs and many advertisements. In answer to many questions made by students, Rannvijay told that after winning Roadies, he went on to host the same show for all seasons from Roadies 2.0 to Roadies 10. He said that country needs young passionate journalists like LPU students. He also shared that having military background in the family he always like to live a passionate and disciplined life. Through such participations on bigger platforms, students indeed gain great exposure.
