3rd Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Conference organized at LPU


  • Conference had one to one interaction between persons affected with spinal cord injury and experts from related fields

In association with Lovely Professional University, ‘Spinal Cord Injury Association (SCIA)’ organized 3rd Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Conference ‘Vistaar’ at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium in LPU Campus.  Different sessions of the conference sensitized society and different agencies to adopt stringent measures in preventing such injuries to happen. Near 200 persons with spine-injuries, even from far off cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, assembled at the campus. All of them had one to one interaction with experts from related fields for befitting solutions and suggestions to their existing problems. On this occasion, 15 wheelchairs were distributed to the affected ones to make them live active life of mobility and self-dependence.  Illustrious personalities who came forward to help the event include Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, MLAs of Jalandhar Cantt and Jalandhar constituencies S Pargat Singh, Sh Rajinder Beri, Sh Sushil Rinku, Sh Bawa Henry, IG Zonal Arpit Shukla, Commissioner Police (Jalandhar) Parveen Sinha, Deputy Commissioner (Jalandhar) Varinder Sharma, Deputy Director, SCERT, (Education Department) Mrs. Shruti Shukla. Many other Civil Officers, Doctors, NGOs participated actively along with 200 NSS volunteers of LPU to make the event a success.

Lovely Professional University’s Mechanical Engineering department organized the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RECENT ADVANCES IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (ICRAME) on April 14 and 15, 2017. The Chief Guest in the event was the honorable Chancellor of Lovely Professional University, Mr. Ashok Mittal. In this  conference 132 research papers were submitted not only from India but also countries like  France.

One of the research-oriented and hardworking students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lovely Professional University, Raj Chawla has received world- wide acclamation for his research on “carbon nano-tube (CNT)”, which is about 10,000 times smaller than a human hair. As CNTs are unique because the bonding between their atoms is very strong, so Raj’s research will guide in having stronger and unbreakable ceramic tiles & plastics; nano-porous air & water-filters; super strong fibers as body and vehicle armour; biocompatible coatings for prosthetics; and, many more cost-effective materials.  The world will also be able to manufacture lighter and stronger materials for greener aircrafts. It is worth mentioning that in comparison to other research scholars of the world  called for their research works, LPU student is still an under graduate and has earned  strong impact factor of 3.897 for his research endeavour.

Presently, 1600+ LPU volunteers are strengthening Tata Power’s largest ‘Conservation Movement’ in the country. Termed as “Fish Knights”, LPU volunteers are now to conserve & rehabilitate endangered fish species “Mahseer” in the country.  It pertains to the survival of the magnificent & valuable Mahseer, one of the 20 mega fishes of the world. This volunteering noble cause is second to massive “Save Tiger” CSR campaign in the country. Feeling enthralled on students’ deep interest in the noble activities, LPU Chancellor Mr. Ashok Mittal blessed students to be always awakened and rise to the occasion to help society for common causes. 

CEO & MD Tata Power Anil Sardana holds: “The survival of the magnificent Mahseer is important towards preserving the eco-system. We are extremely happy that the students and faculty members of Lovely Professional University have joined us in this national movement to conserve and rehabilitate this species of fish.  Through its CSR project ‘Act for Mahseer! Pledge’, Tata Power has provided students an opportunity to join the movement and make a difference through their individual efforts.” 
In fact, this pledge programme is aimed at spreading awareness about the mighty Mahseer. As part of the programme all the registered fish knights will pledge to spread awareness about the campaign and its importance, take active part in Mahseer rehabilitation, and protect Mahseer by preventing water pollution and protecting natural water bodies. Presently, 1600+ “fish knights” of LPU have registered to take a pledge to save the Mahseer. 

One of the LPU volunteers Raman who hails from Assam shares: “We all students at LPU are deeply concerned about Mahseer fish as it is endangered species on IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) Red List. Out of the 47 species of Mahseer that exist in the world, India is home to fifteen. These inhabit the Himalayan foothills, the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra basins and are also found down south in the Cauvery, Kosi and other rivers.  LPU students hail from all of these areas in large number and know well that these are commercially important game fish and highly esteemed food fish. These are also potential species for increasing aquaculture, as have also been introduced in lakes and occurs in large reservoirs. So, we all at LPU feel that it is our prime duty to save the species on priority basis which means much to us all.”

Under corporate social responsibility Lovely Professional University is organizing ‘Self-Defense Training’ workshop at LPU Campus for all of its female students and staff-members. For this, LPU’s School of Professional Enhancement has arranged different sessions to be addressed and demonstrated by an internationally reputed trainer Shri Rajendran Nair of Tata Group. Mr Nair is credited with training 3 lakh women of the country, including women cops of Mumbai Police and other forces. After only an hour’s training at LPU, girl-students are seen turned into solid symbols of confidence & aggression against their oppressors. Addressing the students in very cordial, interesting and amusing manner on grave situations, Mr Nair guided all of them to develop self-esteem by building high-level of self confidence within. Mr Nair advised students to live a fearless life by having full control on their hearts and minds.

Much popular in South Korea, Europe, North America and China; this national championship of e-sports was organized first time for students in India. The five-day e-game of “Counter Strike-Global Offensive” was held under the patronage of AIU (Association of Indian Universities). LPU students’ boys’ team defeated DAV University and won First Cash Prize of Rs 50,000; whereas, LPU girls’ team stood first runner-up and got Rs 25,000 prize. Girls of Punjab University excelled in the women category. Championship was viewed live by a large number of viewers world-wide at www.twitch.tv/eesindia.  E-sports are so much popular that during yester-year, ‘World Championship’ of such events drew 43 million viewers, which is far more than America’s NBA sports Finals.

The School of Mechanical Engineering at Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized four-day International Go-Kart Championship (IGC) 2017, which concluded today at its campus. LPU Society of Automotive Engineers & Collegiate Club (LPU-SAE CC) monitored the whole event for 20,000+ spectators. Much awaited in the engineering students’ community, the event witnessed Innovative engineering students’ self-designed go-karts speeding up on 10 Kms long ‘first ever in-campus Race-Track’ in India. Of 70+ teams registered by international & national students from 7 countries & Indian states, only 25 teams entered final racing round. Showcasing excellent design, sturdy construction and efficient kart, the teams ‘Vijayant’ from Oriental Institute of Science & Technology (Bhopal), ‘Agonaz’ from Government College of Coimbatore and ‘Argus Elite’ of LPU won first prize (Rs 1.10 Lakh), second (Rs 70,000) and third prize (Rs 50,000) respectively. LPU Research Scholar presented her Bacterial Research Work in Thailand

She was specially invited by Chiang Mai University in Thailand to share her prestigious research achievements for the general benefit of global society. Occasion was 6th International Graduate Research Conference (IGRC) 2017 held in Thailand. Theme of the conference was ‘Global Issues and Awareness: Sustainable Development Goals for Energy & Environment, Food & Health, Arts & Cultures’. Deepika shared her presentation entitled “Use of Naturally Occurring Bacteria to Clean Textile Industry Waste Water’’.  She was the only Indian participant among other participants from 25 countries. Hon’ble Union Human Resource Development Minister, Government of India, Shri Prakash Javadekar visited Lovely Professional University today at its Management Conclave-2017 and Annual Honouring Ceremony to award illustrious members of staff and students. Speaking high volumes about different bright aspects of LPU, Hon’ble Minister said: “With strong diversity at its campus, LPU is a global university. Learning at such a university is indeed a basic and real learning rather than mere subject learning. I feel that only that country prospers in the world where its universities prosper.  Education is empowerment and it brings great transformation in life, society and everything.” Explaining that private sector is doing exuberantly well in present time, Mr Minister shared: “Our government is also working on public-private partnerships, where competition and collaboration between the two will certainly bring out the best of India. We feel, whether government or private, only good institutions will flourish and bad will go.  More an institution will be good, more autonomy it will have. Visiting debutant director ‘Shagufta’, who has already written screenplays and dialogues for 11 hit Hindi films, shared all about the plot of the forthcoming film ‘Dushman’ which is to unfold a new chapter of friendship between people of India and Pakistan.   • LPU Students of Journalism & Film Production, Performing Arts and Languages Departments learnt a lot about dialogues, script writing


Internationally acclaimed bollywood writer, actor, director, Amrik Gill reached Lovely Professional University, where he interacted with LPU students of Performing Arts, Languages’ departments, Journalism and Film Production. Having worked with top personalities of the Indian Cinema including Shyam Benegal, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Subhash Ghai, Govind Nihalani, Gulzar and more; Gill has written dialogues for top actors Amitabh Bachchan (Nishabd), Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) and many more. For the last three decades, Gill has continuously contributed for the success of contemporary Indian cinema, performing arts and the literature. Occasion was ‘Story Telling Session’ organized on 100th Birthday Celebration of renowned Punjabi language dramatist, theatre director, novelist and great academician-Balwant Gargi. Amrik Gill has strange ability of assessing and highlighting the social, societal and systemic issues and developing the effective solutions.

Amrik Gill shared time spent in the blessed company of his master Balwant Gargi by reading out aloud his latest writing based on his personal experiences of growth and development. He shared all that he learnt from Gargi, including simple & unique situation based dialogues, how to write & depict, and how to live together in making the Punjabi Language alive in other countries. He also told in Punjabi, “Gargi daang naal likhdaa see, jadke baaki lekhak kalam naal likhde han (In comparison to all other writers, Gargi used to write with force, boldness and openness.)” Having illustrious professional accomplishments; Gill has written for 30 films in Hindi and Punjabi. He is also recipient of top international & national awards including IIFA, ZEE Cinema, Screen awards and many more.
While sharing about his early days of extreme struggles in Mumbai, an NSD graduate in direction Amrik Gill encouraged students not to get dejected at any moment of their life. He shared how he used to spend his sleepless nights on railway platforms and cement benches on side roads and parks. He holds that when the right time comes, it comes fast and in reality. Telling about film world, he says: “It is not easy to incorporate day to day language and realism in film dialogues. A film writer is different from a literary writer because unlike an individual piece of literature, a film involves aspirations of so many people. The acumen of a film writer lies in being flexible wherein both public demand and individual point of view can be put across. Sensibility and choice varies from director to director."

Some of the LPU students Arvind Kaur Heer and Girish Kumar shared: “We used to think that bollywood writers would be of aloof personalities. However, meeting Amrik Gill Jee face to face, we have come to know that they are more of like us. However, they have special ears for emotions, eyes for symbols, humour for human psychology and a flare to put them together in their writings. Through his lecture, we have gained this all and other great teachings, which Amrik Gill Jee forwarded to us in easy manner.”
